This type of malt and sweet beer tends to be the favorite winter season. There is a large malt in both the aroma and body. The color of this style ranges from brownish reds to almost pitch black. The hops bitterness is generally low and balanced, but the aroma may be pronounced in the character of the hops.
Most English versions do not have spices, but some spicy seasonal ale beers will say "Winter Warmer" on their labels. Spicy ones tend to follow the tradition of wassail, which blends solid beers with a combination of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and the like before hops become the main "spice" in beer. Most American varieties have more hops, both bitter and taste.
