Proper Beer Serving Temperatures

According to experts, each beer has an ideal temperature to drink. You don’t need to be an expert for this kind of judgment though, we can understand more or less from its taste. Usually, the service temperature is related to the alcohol content of the beer.

It is recommended to serve warmer or near room temperature as the alcohol content in the beer increases. Because such beers are already drunk slowly due to their high alcohol content, and the mixed flavors and aromas they contain are enjoyed in this way. Low alcohol beers such as Pilsners are drunk for cooling and reach their true consistency when drunk cold.

Another issue is the glass temperature you will use before drinking. Depending on the type of beer you will drink, serve it either at room temperature or from a glass you have kept in the refrigerator. But do not use a glass you have kept in the freezer for serving beer. Ice-cold glasses hide the fragrances and aromas of the beer and cause them to foam more than necessary.

The last issue is about the marketing tactics of big brands. These manufacturers recommend that you drink their beer that is cold enough to numb your mouth and tongue. The main reason behind it is that these beers either don’t taste or taste very bad when they get hot.

You can find the types of beer below according to the recommended temperatures generally:

  • 40 and below (4 ℃): Lite, and otherwise one-dimensional refreshment beers
  • 40 – 45 (4 ℃7 ℃): Lagers, German Pilsners, wheat beers, Kolsch, lighter fruit beers, American dark lagers, lighter in profile but with more available complexity
  • 45 – 50 (7 ℃ – 10 ℃): American pale ales, IPAs, porters, stouts, Bohemian pilsner, English golden ale, Belgian ale, Spanish and French cider, unsweetened lambics, and gueuzes
  • 50 – 55 (10 ℃13 ℃): Bocks, English beers (bitters and milds), Scottish ales, Brown ale, Saison, Abbey Dubbel
  • 55 – 60 (13 ℃16 ℃): Stronger beers like Imperials, doppelbock, barleywines
