The brewery was established in San Diego in 1995 by Skip Virgilio and Ted Newcomb. Skip Virgilio was AleSmith's unique brewmaster. Diminish Zien became a brewmaster after buying the organization in July 2002. Zien is a BJCP "Stupendous Master level 1" beer judge, the only one in San Diego County.
The first brewery is situated at 9366 Cabot Drive in San Diego's Miramar territory. In 2015 the organization included a much bigger brewery and tasting room, likewise in Miramar, at 9990 AleSmith Court. At 25,000 square feet, the tasting room is charged because of the biggest beer tasting room in San Diego County. Brewing tasks at the new office will within the end of the day extend the organization's brewing limit ten times, as indicated by Zien.
In 2008, AleSmith was granted "Little Brewing Company and little Brewing Company Brewer of the Year" at the good American Beer Festival.
In 2015, AleSmith declared that Danish wanderer brewer Mikkeller had collaborated with them to show the primary office, situated on Cabot Drive, into Mikkeller San Diego.
